Unit 1: Government & Politics
In Canada you become "enfranchised" once you become 18 years of age. That's a fancy way of saying you're old enough to participate in the democratic process, which in turn is another fancy way of simply saying that you can vote. And you should vote. But if you're like many other Canadians, the whole political process and politics itself is enough to completely turn you off of getting involved in government affairs. This unit covers everything from the major ideologies to the key people in the current Canadian federal, provincial and municipal political spectrums.

Unit 2: Human Geography
This unit will encourage you to become active Canadian citizens through the demonstration of respect for diversity and collaboration with others to define and meet ethically responsible objectives, as required by the Social Studies 11 PLOs. The close analysis of geographic tools, like maps, graphs, population pyramids and charts will not only help you to become familiar with patterns and trends affecting global human population but will also help to contextualize Canada’s policies on immigration, social justice and welfare. You will also consider the impact that Canada has on the environment and consider ways in which Canadians can choose whether or not to lead the world in environmental reform through addressing issues of global warming, ozone layer depletion, and fresh water quality and supply. Through exploration of these pressing global issues we can harbour and encourage assertive, compassionate Canadian citizenship.

Unit 3: Canada 1900-1914
The major topic of discussion in this unit is Canada at the turn of the century. Canada in the post-Victorian era is both a vibrant yet intolerant place. This unit looks at the historical basis of intolerance, racism, and exclusion directed towards such ethnic groups as the Chinese, East Indians, and Canada's Aboriginal population. Government policies such as residential schools and the Chinese Head Tax unfortunately became known as a black-eye in Canada's history. Precursor events to World War 1 will also be touched on in this unit.

Unit 4: WW1
The First World War had a profound effect on the world. The world that existed in 1918 was drastically different than the one of 1914 as the former global empires now lay in ruin. The purpose of this unit is for students to understand the role that Canada played in World War One; with the primary focus being on the impact of Canadians at home and on the Western Front. Through studying World War One, students will be able to place Canada within the context of the world.
