ENGLISH 10 PROVINCIAL EXAM REVIEW
You need to be able to apply and recognize poetry devices and literary terms.
Also, you should be able to effectively write a multi-paragraph composition that discusses the commonalities and differences between a poem and a story. Common aspects typically include the theme, characterization, and conflict. There may be a difference in outcomes between the story and poem, even if there are other similarities, so read carefully!
Do the practice provincials AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE to familiarize yourself with the level of difficulty to expect on the exam. Remember, comparing means to describe how things are similar and contrasting means to describe how things are different. You do not have to do the essay components of the exams, but it would be a good idea to look at each essay question and view the answer sheet to see what they are looking for. This will be VERY helpful for you in figuring out the level of depth to go for on those long answer questions.
Another thing to consider is that every question on the exam will deal directly with the poems or stories. The multiple choice questions will be tricky and may give you a few answers that make good sense, but that have nothing to do with what the story or poem are actually speaking about. Always choose the answer that best answers the question being asked AND that best relates to the story or poem being discussed.
